Dear Professor Allen:

Arthur Thomas came to Stanford as an interdisciplinary graduate student in
July 1971. He has just finished a thesis entitled %2Representation and Perception:
An Essay in Computational Metaphysics%*
and is now revising it in accordance
with the wishes of his committee. I am confident that he will produce a
version that will be satisfactory to all of us.

Thomas's interests range over psychology, neurophysiology, philosophy and
artificial intelligence, and he has a wide knowledge of all of these areas.
His thesis undertakes the difficult task of discussing the relationships
of these fields in a manner that does justice to all of them.

I think Thomas is a good candidate for this post - assuming
that a broad point of view and not just programming ability is required.
He can be counted on to originate interesting and ambitious projects.
